Amakhala Woodbury Tented Camp is an intimate, three-star bush camp located on the spectacular Amakhala Game Reserve and run by the Gush family, who have lived on the land for five generations. Many of our staff have grown up in the area and take pride in ensuring that your African safari experience is a memorable one.
In the heart of the bush
Tucked into a secluded hillside thicket overlooking the ancient floodplain of the Bushman’s River, the Amakhala Woodbury Tented Camp is one of the hidden jewels of the Eastern Cape.
Ten comfortable en-suite tents on raised bases, each with its own private deck, allow guests to enjoy a rare intimacy with nature. Each tent has hot running water, the option of king-size or twin beds and electric blankets for those cosy evenings. Also in the portfolio are two family tents which connect via a balcony, allowing families to enjoy the African bush together.
Twice daily game drives with one of our friendly and professional guides offer the chance for exciting Big Five game viewing and unforgettable sundowners in the bush. Camp life is centred around the thatch-and-canvas dining and lounge area, with its expansive deck overlooking the Woodbury plains. A wide variety of game species such as zebra, giraffe, buffalo and elephant can often be seen from the deck, while the haunting cry of fish eagles echoes across the valley.
If you are lucky you will witness something really special on a game drive like we did, although not many people would be fortunate enough to say they witness a live giraffe birth. You will also be playing your part in a responsible tourism establishment that donates a portion of every guest’s stay to the Amakhala Foundation based in the nearby Paterson community.
