The best halfway stop in South Africa

In the bedrooms the comfy beds have crisp linen, plump pillows. Outside, white walls dazzle and creepers climb over the veranda. Adding to the interest of the obviously well-loved property, is a bricked patio, captivating and colourful flower-beds abounding in the garden. Something to be welcomed in Free State summers is our crystal clear swimming pool. Adding to the overall sense of peace and tranquility is our series of fishponds. But obviously, the reason you come here is to be looked after, and arriving from the biscuity veld, you’ll feel lucky indeed.

Meals are normally of three courses. Typically, guests are introduced to their meal by a choice of homemade pate, either chicken liver or snoek pate. In the winter a wholesome, warming soup could well be included on the menu. The main course often is roast leg of peerless Karoo lamb or roast neck of pork. Meals predictably come to a fitting conclusion with a choice of puddings such as Mousse au Chocolat, Pear Poached in Red Wine or the speciality of the house; Home-Made Ice Cream with “Death by Chocolate”.

The garden has been subject to a comprehensive replanting programme. A swimming pool has been built which guests find a welcome relief after a long and hot journey. In winter guests can relax in the warm sitting room or go for a brisk walk before enjoying a delicious dinner.

Throughout the house, there is an extensive collection of South African and European paintings and objet d’art.

Graeme Wedgwood, owner of Springfontein House, has been in the hospitality industry for 17 years and has an absolute legion of satisfied customers to vouch for his success. Cultured and a lover of fine art and all things good, he stands out in the catering business as an extremely interesting person.

“Sometimes its not all the amenities in an establishment that you are after but rather a bit more of a human touch, charm and character. Springfontein House run by passionate Graeme Wedgewood, is a strategic place to visit while travelling the N1. But please don’t aim for an early night, join Graeme for a lavishly prepared dinner and enthusiastic conversation over a glass of wine. He has plenty of stories worth telling.
Ideal N1 stop-over en route to Cape Town or Joburg (or anywhere in between).” Roger, The Expedition Project
