Promoting the welfare of donkeys through a culture of caring

In 2001 Dr Johan & Annemarie van Zijl of McGregor village in the Western Cape of South Africa responded to a request from the SPCA to provide shelter for two badly neglected donkeys.

Their mission is promoting the welfare and status of donkeys through a culture of caring.

One of the ways you can help is to adopt a donkey for a year to help towards the costs of our work. You choose the amount you wish to give to your donkey. You will receive:

  • details of the donkey you decide to adopt
  • a photo
  • an adoption certificate
  • a twice-yearly report
  • our quarterly newsletter

And you are most welcome to come and visit your special donkey!

Adoption makes an ideal anniversary, birthday, special occasion or Christmas present.

"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. – Mahatma Ghandi". In celebration of Women's month, we wish to pay tribute to all the phenomenal women who continue to inspire us with their strength. We are reminded of this strength whenever we see Lulu, our rescued donkey from Barrydale. Lulu has overcome great odds, having undergone surgery to her hindleg after it was nearly severed by barbed wire prior to her coming to live at the Sanctuary. Lulu has made a full recovery and continues to amaze us with her perky attitude and confidence. A true testament to her inner strength. #womansmonth #donkeysanctuary #strength #innerstrength #strong #donkeys #strongwomen #truegrit #healing #powerful
