‘Herries’, this local restaurant and shop was named after Herrie the elephant, a character in one of South African author CJ Langenhoven’s books. CJ carved this name on a stone in Meiringspoort.

Hundreds of years after the first weary travellers sought comfort at this serene spot on the southern side of the treacherous Meiringspoort, De Rust continues to offer peace and tranquillity to body and soul.
On the edge of the Klein-Karoo, in a valley between two mountain ranges, lies the tiny town with the perfect name, which means “The Rest”. Travelling from Oudtshoorn, carpets of wild Spring flowers brighten the drive into De Rust on the first hot day of the new season. Visitors compete for shade while browsing through the town which won the 2011 Kwêla Rapport South Africa and Namibia Dorp van die Jaar (Town of the Year).
