There is no more adventurous in South Africa than the Kalahari and Drakensberg. Combine them and you have the ultimate in not only ‘off the beaten track’ but hard core and unforgiving!
Kalahari – Kalahari Desert, large basin-like plain of the interior plateau of Southern Africa. It occupies almost all of Botswana, the eastern third of Namibia, and the northernmost part of Northern Cape province in South Africa. We will be looking solely at the South African region of the Kalahari.
Drakensberg – (Zulu: uKhahlamba, Sotho: Maloti, Afrikaans: Drakensberge) is the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, which encloses the central Southern African plateau. The Great Escarpment reaches its greatest elevation – 2,000 to 3,482 metres (6,562 to 11,424 feet) within the border region of South Africa and Lesotho. The Drakensberg is also the main mountain range of Southern Africa. The Drakensberg rises to more than 11,400 feet (3,475 metres) and extends roughly northeast to southwest for 700 miles (1,125 km) parallel to the south-eastern coast of South Africa. Rock and cave art several thousands of years old has been found in the range.
