This ancient and beautiful land is not only amazingly rich in diversity, it also reflects an endless variety of moods, making each encounter refreshingly different from the previous ones. Here you will experience first-hand the red dunes and dry riverbeds, open spaces, star-studded nights and camelthorn trees symbolising the Kalahari Red Dune Route.
The colour of the dunes in the southern Kalahari can be attributed to the high iron oxide content of the sand, which leaches out transforming the desert into a wonderful variety of colours.
Once you’re on the main dust-lining towards the gates of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a whole world of gravel awaits. Comfortable lodges, rustic bush camps, traditional San villages, and hospitable guest farms dot the arid wilderness, but more than anything, you will be able to find peace and tranquillity here.
The route incorporates the first formally Transfrontier Conservation area in Africa, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The Northern Cape is scattered with diverse culture, rich frontier history and activities to suit every adrenaline junkie’s taste.
The route also offers the opportunity to experience regional customs and folklore, sample traditional cuisine, and meet the warm and welcoming people of the Kalahari.
The Kalahari Red Dune Route offers accommodation and activities, starting 50km from Upington on the R360, heading to Kgalagadi Park. The area covered by the route extends north of Upington in the Northern Cape province of South Africa into the toe-shaped protrusion of South Africa to the Namibian border.
