Week 25…Durban to Scottburgh

18 June 2012

Day 170

The final day of admin before collecting Maddy from King Shaka International Airport tomorrow and then moving on down the east coast on Wednesday.

19 June 2012

Day 171

Maddy arrived back from London and had a successful reconnaissance trip. Her networking proved useful and hopefully will reap some rewards sooner rather than later with regard to international and UK-based partners and sponsorship.

Day 172

After a long stay in Durban, it was off down the south coast of KZN, but not before a fantastic film shoot with Dan Redman (Quiksilver surfer) at Durban’s North Beach. The next stop was Amanzimtoti and our host – Beethoven Lodge. We linked up with The View Boutique Hotel and their onsite restaurant – Giorgio’s for a great lunch and chat. Dinner at Beethoven was equally good and a welcomed fresh fish meal.

Day 173

On departure from Beethoven, we were blown away by the support and enthusiasm from owner Jacq for our project. It is people like this that keep us motivated. Onto Umkomaas, a terrific divers’ town, and a great example of a small town on the south coast of KZN. Our host was Englishman, Mick, at Umkomaas Guest House.

Day 174

After an early breakfast we were off to meet the guys at Umkomaas Lodge Dive Charters for an attempted boat trip – the weather was unfortunately not on our side and so it was postponed until tomorrow. A few days of rain and overcast conditions arrived for the first time on our trip. Due to the weather, the rest of the day was admin, admin, admin. A dreary day was finished off with a great sponsored meal at the best restaurant in town – Sabastian’s Seafood Grill and Pub. We had a massive speciality burger and fragrant curry.

Day 175

This time our boat trip was successful, well to a certain degree. We ventured out 5km to sea with a dive group and ended up sitting on a RIB while they dived the famous Aliwal Shoal. Sadly, we sighted no sea life and spent the time chatting and interviewing the skipper of the boat. Following the trip it was off to Scottburgh, the oldest town on the south coast, and what a cool town it was. We checked into Ambercrest B&B and met two great guys – Leon and Neels – who told us all about the history and present situation of the town. The rain continued but this was overcome by having a fantastic ‘bunny chow’ dinner with Leon and Neels.

Day 176

The sun was back out and so it was time to explore the town and especially the magnificent beach. We spotted an ideal location for http://beachfestival.co.za/. After a bit of filming and photographing at Scottburgh’s main beach, we checked into Ediston Inn, our second host in Scottburgh. Ediston Inn is a B&B in the oldest building in town –  a great colonial house re-vamped for tourism. Dinner was warmly sponsored by Nello’s, a great Italian ex-pat who served us two delicious pizzas.
