  1. Izzy Beardwood says:

What sedatives are used to dart the elephants and what are the considerations for your choice in terms of safety and efficacy?

  2. Izzy Beardwood says:

What are the major risks involved in moving such large animals

  3. Izzy Beardwood says:

Is any research or any health checks conducted at the time of sedation? (Eg. collecting bloods, hair samples etc.)

  4. Izzy Beardwood says:

What do you have to consider when moving a group of animals- Do you have to always move the entire herd of animals? How do you select a location for movement? Are there ever conflicts with other groups of animals in this new environment? How do you prevent further human-wildlife conflicts in this new area? How do you protect the environment as elephants can be quite destructive.

  5. Izzy Beardwood says:

Previously you have discussed elephant overpopulation- Is elephant translocation really a sustainable way of managing populations? What do you think needs to be implemented to best ensure the survival of this species/ what management strategies could we employ? (Also consider in an ideal world what would you do?)

  6. Elli Verrocchi says:

Is there any current surveillance/monitoring of elephant herds? If so, how is this managed? What things/criteria do you look for when you are thinking about translocating elephants?

  7. Elli Verrocchi says:

How many resources (e.g. people, transport, equipment etc.) does it take for an average elephant translocation? How is the cost of these resources funded? In the future, do you think there are other less-costly means to ensure elephants live harmoniously with their environment? What could be done to mitigate the need to translocate in the first place?

  8. Elli Verrocchi says:

What are some of your highlights and low points about undertaking these translocating operations? Is there anything that you think could be done better or more efficiently?

  9. Elli Verrocchi says:

For someone wanting to get involved in elephant/wildlife translocating, how would they go about entering this career type?

  10. Emma Seed says:

Since elephants are social animals, what are the impacts on the herd the elephant is removed from or the group it is added to?

  11. Emma Seed says:

What sorts of welfare considerations are there during translocations to help reduce stress for the elephant, particularly on longer journeys?

  12. Emma Seed says:

Are translocated elephants always successful at integrating into a new herd and adapting to a new area with resources such as food and water in different places?

  13. Karina Khatic says:

What are the risks involved with moving elephants? What precautions are taken to make their translocation the least stressful and safe for them and the surrounding persons?

  14. Karina Khatic says:

Are there any common complications that occur due to the administration of sedatives during this process of translocation as they are heavily tranquilized?

  15. Joshua Howell says:

What considerations would you take if you notice the elephant that you need to dart is in “Musth” and would this only be a concern in sexually active adult bulls?

  16. Joshua Howell says:

Have you seen cases when a juvenile or a old elephant has been darted and the sedative caused severe respiratory depression preventing their transport / translocation and if this happens what would you do?

  17. Joshua Howell says:

I noted that in the TEP elephant’s course that you use Etorphine as the primary drug in your darts and I was wondering why you prefer this drug over Thiafentanil as I read that this could potentially be an alternative drug which may not cause the hypertension that is induced by Etorphine? Thanks.
