University Representative Profile – Mehran Sajjad, University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Hi, I’m Mehran – Member of the Dick Vet Wildlife Zoological Society at Edinburgh University. I have been a part of The Expedition Project team since 2024.
Since working with The Expedition Project, I have been helping by connecting my university and fellow students with TEP opportunities.
WHEN DID I FIRST REALISE I WANTED TO BE A VET?
I have always loved animals, but I think I officially realized I wanted to be a vet when I started volunteering at adoption events while growing up. I loved spending time with rescue animals and talking to potential owners about how to care for them.
WHAT IS MY MOTIVATION TO BECOME A VET?
I really want to help animals because they are intrinsically linked to human life. Specifically, I would like to work in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Humans have had such a negative impact on wildlife populations, and I would like to try and alleviate the effects as much as possible.
MY BIGGEST TIP IF YOU WANT TO STUDY TO BECOME A VET IS…
Never be discouraged by your mistakes! Becoming a vet is hard, and you’re bound to have a few hiccups along the way. As long as you keep learning from your mistakes and getting as much hands on experience as possible, you can study to become a vet.
THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING A VET IS…
Seeing an animal in pain. Being a vet means that you have to treat a lot of sick animals, some who can’t be saved. It can take an emotional toll on a person. However, I try to think about the positive impact veterinary care has on animals. Vets are trying to improve animals’ quality of life, and that is worth the struggle.
WHAT IS MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL?
River otters! They are so cute and make the silliest sounds.
MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL-RELATED STORY IS…
From when I worked at a Wildlife Center. We had a baby hummingbird come into the Center with a broken wing, and it had to be nursed back to health. I responsible for syringe feeding the bird glucose water throughout the day, and I absolutely loved seeing its little tongue pop in and out of the liquid.
