Drop-in Centre, Youth Service and Soup Kitchen

In Victoria West, chatting to people in the street led us to a bundle of government funded social initiatives including a soup kitchen for the youth and elderly, and a variety of skills development programs for the unemployed.

WEEKLY (remote) ACTIVITY PARTNER CHECK-IN: @imontitours / @myveza, East London. The EXPEDITION Project team was lucky enough to be joined by Velile of Imonti Tours in East London. He kindly showed us around five different projects all situated within the second largest township in South Africa. The first project we headed to was a soup kitchen run by Sister Nobulali. Here at Econno Kitchens they do the amazing job of feeding both old and young in the local area. They also grow some of the produce they use for the feeding programme on the property. We then wound our way to Zamani Day Care Center where we were met by Miss Yoyo. There was a lively atmosphere and the children sang some songs for us we joined in with some of the actions! Mdantsane Arts Center was next. Here they teach music, art and drama to youth. We met with a few of the inspirational people who work here including the music teacher who is passionate about passing on his skills. There is nothing he won't say no to in terms of teaching new instruments to anyone who is keen. He sang for us as well! More music was in store for us at GBM Music Academy, a great place where a local band comes to practice as well as teach local children how to play music. We ended the day at Ubuntu Rescue a Child at Risk Center. All of the children were back at “home” after school so we saw the center in full swing. Most of the children were playing outside so we were able to look around the talk with the passionate woman who runs the center. For more information about the activities of the projects supported by Imonti Tours, visit www.imontitours.co.za / @myveza The EXPEDITION Project team would like to thank Arum Guest House and Quarry Lake Inn in East London, as well as Die Tuishuise in Cradock for their generous support along the way and making these project visits possible.
