Join us on the 18th of February as we explore the impact rabies has had on marine life.
For the first time in history, rabies has leapt into the ocean, posing a global threat not only to marine ecosystems but also to human safety.
Dutch filmmaker Floris Tils together with Capetonian Producer Melite Vivier and artist Theko Boshomane have been documenting the spread and impact of this crisis on marine wildlife.
They will share their findings and present a short screening of their film, Out of the Blue.
About the Film: Out of the Blue
This documentary follows the alarming die-off of Cape Fur Seals in South Africa—a mystery that has marine biologists puzzled and local communities at risk as the seals become increasingly aggressive.
Narrated by Theko Boshomane, a local painter with a deep connection to the seals, the film explores their changing behaviour through his art. Along the way, it introduces the people whose lives are most affected.
Scientists and researchers are racing to uncover the cause of the die-off, ultimately discovering a deadly disease spreading through the seal population. This disease not only threatens marine life but also has the potential for global consequences, impacting human safety.
Despite limited resources, the investigation highlights an urgent need for global action, as South Africans battle to contain the outbreak before it spirals out of control.
