So I can say for certain that dehorning rhinos is a painless procedure for the rhino. The horn is made of keratin, the same as our fingernails or hair, so it is painless to cut so long as you avoid the sensitive tissue at the base of the horn. The procedure has to be performed under general anesthesia and this is what poses the greatest risk to the rhino, but over the years this risk has greatly reduced as vets and ground teams have improved techniques to make the procedure as safe as possible.
