The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation is a South African non-profit, public benefit organisation (PBO) focused on inspiring people to take action for the ocean, and building connections between communities and the marine ecosystem. Founded in 2019, the Foundation continues the legacy of marine sciences education, conservation and research efforts of the Two Oceans Aquarium – a key player in environmental awareness, action and passion in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront.

The Foundation continues to expand its wide range of public benefit activities while increasing positive social and environmental impact through sharing information and inspiring behaviour change. Our programmes relate to all the Sustainable Development Goals, with full alignment to SDG’s.

Connecting all people to the ocean

In 2019 we reached more than 110 000 children through our educational programmes, with more than 55 000 learners through our outreach programmes at under-resourced schools. Our environmental awareness campaigns reached almost 20 000 people through various presentations and collaborations on activations such as beach clean-ups. Our conservation and welfare teams rescued, rehabilitated and released more than 200 sea turtles and assisted with the disentanglement of more than 40 seals. We continue to nurture and inspire the next generation of decision-makers and influencers, whether they are marine scientists, educators, innovators or in professional trade, they have the potential to be conservation champions to ensure the future well-being of our oceans. Through our education and awareness efforts, we want to empower communities to become agents of change for protecting our oceans.

Our Mission

Informing and inspiring all to connect with and protect our ocean, and the natural world, through conservation, awareness, research and education.

Our Vision

Connecting all people to the ocean.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation is a Trust established in the Republic of South Africa and is registered with the Master of the High Court whose founding document is a trust deed. The founder is the Two Oceans Aquarium Trust (IT2601/94).

The objective of the Trust is to engage in Public Benefit Activities aimed at the areas of education, conservation and research in order to benefit the South African public.

The Public Benefit Activities are carried out in a non-profit manner and with altruistic or philanthropic intent. The approved Public Benefit Activities of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation fall within:

Conservation and animal welfare

Turtles Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release Programme

With incredible support from the Two Oceans Aquarium and an extensive network of organisations, partners, volunteers and donors, we have been able to successfully rehabilitate and release more than 600 endangered sea turtles.

Loggerhead hatchlings are our most common patients, but we have rehabilitated stranded and injured green, olive ridley, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles.

Marine Wildlife Management Programme

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is visited by many wild marine animals and we have played an integral role in monitoring all marine wildlife in this area and responding to injured animals. From a variety of seabirds to seals and sunfish, we are always on standby to assist as well as educate visitors and tenants.

We have been playing a very supportive function in the seal disentanglement programme in collaboration with the Two Oceans Aquarium and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, and have assisted more than 1000 entangled seals over the last decade.

Awareness

Both the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation and the Aquarium carry the mandate to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage others to live sustainable lifestyles. To aid in reaching this goal, the Foundation and Aquarium run a number of high-profile campaigns emphasising the importance of choosing reusable options over single-use plastics, such as Rethink the Bag.

Research

With the establishment of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, the Two Oceans Aquarium has grown its research capacity. The Education Foundation supports various external research projects and has increased its internal research outcomes significantly through strong collaboration with a number of higher education institutions and research organisations.

Education

We place a strong emphasis on marine science education, for the benefit of future generations of South African children, and the ocean at large. Efforts of the Education Foundation in this regard include sponsored environmental education outreach programmes, early childhood development lessons, various courses through our Marine Sciences Academy and thousands of lessons for learners at our discovery centres and also online
