Week 21…Kwa-Zulu Natal

21 May 2012

Day 142

Mkuze to Zululand Rhino Reserve

Made our way to another reserve, this time the Zululand Rhino Reserve and to Rhino River Lodge. The lodge was beautiful and our chalet was massive. Everything was done to a very high calibre at Rhino River.

Day 143

Zululand Rhino Reserve

We had the chance to go and see a game capture with the staff which was a fascinating experience. It is something tourists rarely, if ever, do and it was a really great opportunity to see how nature is controlled and how animals are sold and moved to other reserves with the least stress possible.

Day 144

Zululand Rhino Reserve to Hluhluwe

We left the reserve and on to the next town, Hluhluwe, a small but sweet little Zulu town. We stayed at Umkhumbi Lodge run by the lovely Emma & Anton who had many interesting stories and viewpoints. A long day of admin and catching up on work but the following morning we had a nice long breakfast with Emma which was nice.

Day 145

Hluhluwe

We moved accommodation, and to Wilderbees Lodge to check out the fantastic ecolabel projects they have going on at the lodge. Martijn took us to see a very needy school which he supports and told us all about the various other work they are doing for their community. Sadly Rog had a very bad neck so has had to take it easy the past few days.

Day 146

Hluhluwe to Mtubatuba

Drove to Mtubatuba and to Wendy’s Country Lodge, run by the warm and friendly Wendy who more than included us in her family birthday celebrations. We were treated to a delicious dinner and had very interesting chats with some Americans who were in South Africa and Swaziland training nurses.

Day 147

Mtubatuba to St Lucia

After only a short stay with Wendy, we were ready to head for the coast, and the Indian Ocean at that! Seeing it for the first time was wonderful and St. Lucia itself is a lovely little beach town. We checked into Avalone Guesthouse and instantly felt right at home with Monica…so much so that when we left we felt as though we were saying goodbye to family. Maddy cooked with Monica that afternoon and learned to make the traditional bobotie, which was proudly served up for supper that night.

Day 148

St Lucia

Made use of the guesthouse wifi and had a very mundane admin day. Got a lot done though so I suppose that’s all that counts. Watched the final of American Idol with Monica that evening which was a lot of fun.
