Week 17…Back to the perimeter route

23 April 2012

Day 114

Modimolle (via Bela Bela) to Naboomspruit

Rog and I had both been suffering from what felt like chronic fatigue, so it was straight to bed when we arrived at Mount Amanzi Lodge that evening (we didn’t even bother with dinner).

Day 115

Naboomspruit

A very laborious admin day, filled with millions of emails, photo edits and video uploads. Met with Willie in the afternoon for a chat and later he surprised us with a wonderful meal of salad, noodles and then a tray of naughties for pudding. To bed early again.

Day 116

Naboomspruit to Haakdoring

We drove 3 hours to Haakdoring and to the famous Legends Golf & Safari Resort. The golf course is modelled after 18 other famous courses in the world and is pretty impressive actually. Rog had a successful talk with Pete, the PR manager at the resort who was informative and friendly. That night we ate at the restaurant and were served a delicious meal of soup and steak.

Day 117

Haakdoring to Phalabowra

Drove on to Phalabowra (6 hours in total with a stop) and had our second unfortunate incident of the trip. The place we had booked to stay had no recollection of our booking and therefore we were faced with the embarrassing task of explaining everything. After a frosty atmosphere the next morning we decided it was best to leave and move on.

Day 118

Phalabowra to Timbavati

And how glad were we that we did move on…Tanda Tula in the Timbavati Game Reserve of the Kruger is by far the best place we have stayed on the entire trip. It was just beautiful. Civilised was there to meet us and show us our tent which was far superior to anything we had stayed in before. A delicious meal that night with the other guests of the lodge.

Day 119

Timbavati

The next morning, we were up at 5 am for a morning game drive where we saw a lion, leopard and cub as well as a rhino and lots of bokkies. It was a great morning and worth getting up for. Served a gorgeous bush breakfast near where we stopped after our game drive where we had pancakes, fresh fruit and sausages. Man, it was good. Had a great meeting with the owners of the lodge that afternoon where we learnt all about its history and its plans to go green. We both can really say we hope it does.

Day 120

Timbavati to Hoedspruit

Time to say goodbye to the beautiful Tanda Tula and on to Hoedspruit where we were lucky enough to find somewhere to stay at the very last minute, on a Sunday AND on a public holiday. Thank you so much Maruleng Lodge for being so accommodating!
