How Electricity is made:

You don’t have to be a scientist to understand how electricity is made. When you understand the process, you’ll also understand why we can’t store it, making it essential that we ‘save’ it wherever we can.
Michael Faraday discovered in 1831 that magnets and moving wire had strange effects on each other when they moved closer together. In fact, Faraday found that the mechanical energy used to move a magnet inside a coil of wire could be changed into electrical energy. It is this simple discovery, which has led to modern power stations.

Standby Power
Most people don't know this, but even when your appliances are switched off they still use power. When an appliance is in stand-by mode it draws a substantial amount of electricity over time. Only by switching unnecessary appliances off directly at the wall socket can you be sure it's not wasting any unnecessary electricity.
Standby power tip:

  • Always unplug unnecessary appliances at the wall socket
